An RFI is the formal channel through which the field interrogates the contract document set\.  It isn't a text, a hallway question, or a phone call to the architect— it's an actual documented request that goes on the project record\.[1](/blog/blog-what-does-rfi-mean-in-construction#ref-1)  If a question isn't an RFI, it isn't on the record\.

The target is always the documents themselves: drawings, specifications, or other contract documents\.  RFIs surface when something on those documents is unclear, missing, contradictory, or impossible to build as drawn\.[1](/blog/blog-what-does-rfi-mean-in-construction#ref-1)  The architect or design team responds in writing, usually within 6 to 10 days as set by the contract\.[2](/blog/blog-what-does-rfi-mean-in-construction#ref-2)

Volume is real\. **Why it matters:** The field stops to wait for an answer\.  If they guess, you get rework\.  Either way, it's schedule\.
